“Are you kidding me? That would be crazy!”

“Yes, it is crazy, no question about it. But is it any more crazy than allowing a nuclear-armed Taliban? That must be stopped at all costs. The Pakistanis won"t ever give up their nukes voluntarily as long as India has hers. India won"t ever give up her nukes because she has the second-largest population of any country on earth. She is also a trusted ally of the United States.”

“So is Pakistan.”

“On paper, yes, but in reality, not so much.”

“No other suggestions?”

“You could send an ambassador or high-level Presidential aide to talk to all parties, but I doubt that will do much good.”

“Remember, intelligence states that the move on Pakistan will take place within two months. Who would you talk to if you were arranging something like this?”

“Well, your ambassador could talk to that son of a bitch that I met with and try and talk sense into him, or talking to the Chinese might bear fruit. I just don"t know.”

“David, would you undertake the mission as my representative?”

“What? Me? I"m out of office, and I have a kid now, one that I intend to adopt.”

“All the more reason you should take this assignment. I"ll appoint you ambassador-at-large with the responsibility of defusing this situation. If the Chinese actually sink a carrier, there will be one Out of the Gilded Cage
